Ferrocement
Ferrocement or ferro-cement is
a construction material consisting of wire meshes and cement
mortar. Applications of ferrocement in construction is vast due to the low
self-weight, lack of skilled workers, no need of
framework etc.
Properties
of Ferrocement
Ø Strength is depend on mainly two factors such as quality of
sand/cement used in mix and quantity of reinforcing materials used.
Ø Highly versatile form of reinforced concrete.
Ø Small diameter of wire meshes of uniform size used throughout the
cross section.
Ø Good alternative of concrete Portland cement mortar.
Ø Mesh may be metal or suitable material.

Disadvantages
of Ferrocement
Ø It can be damaged by pointed object.
Ø Large no of labours required.
Ø Imperfect coverage of metal by mortar will result in corrosion of
reinforcement.
Ø It is difficult to fasten to Ferrocement with bolts, screws, welding
and nail etc.
Ø Tying rods and mesh together is especially tedious and time
consuming.
